Launched in 2011, Geocycle is now a global leader in innovative and sustainable waste management solutions. It handles various types of waste such as, production waste, construction and demolition waste, expired finished goods, production rejects and chemicals, to name a few. In alignment with the global sustainable development goals, it is working towards eliminating the current negative practices of waste management, such as landfilling and incineration and accordingly aiding with, saving our natural resources, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, fighting climate change and balancing the ecological footprint. In treating waste, it follows the principles of the waste management hierarchy outlined in the EU Waste Framework Directive and the Basel Convention. The co-processing solution tackles recycle and recover simultaneously. Preparing waste for safe and responsible final treatment through co-processing requires considerable expertise and investment. Geocycle has the installations, people and know-how to do so, whether through shredding, sorting, homogenising or drying of waste materials. We aim to minimise and repurpose the waste generated by our partners. We help them convert it from an operational liability to proof of their efforts to act responsibly in all aspects of their business.
SAFE DISPOSAL OF EGYPTIAN PORTS’ HAZARDOUS PESTICIDES
Egyptian Ministry of Environmental Affairs joined forces with Geocycle for the safe disposal of obsolete pesticides dumped at Alexandria, Safaga and Adabiya ports through its “Sustainable Persistent Organic Pollutant Management Project”. The 200 tonnes of pesticides were disposed through Co-processing: Where the waste is flashed at the kiln inlet zone, separating the organics from the inorganic ash by virtue of
high temperature. The organics are totally oxidized to CO2+H2O at a temperature range of 1100 -1200°C with a residence time >15 seconds; whereas the ashes are co-processed at a temperature range of 1200-1400° covering a residence time >20 minutes. Adham Elmahdy, General Manager of Geocycle Egypt, explained, “As a company, team and individuals we are firm believers that collaboration, creative thinking and agility are the main pillars of developing efficient, sustainable and impactful solutions. Providing safer, smarter and sustainable waste management solutions is part of our unwavering mission towards accelerating the pace of achieving Egypt vision 2030 and collectively, global sustainability goals. Additionally, we also focus on the human and culture aspects. Taking great pride in our corporate social responsibility, and trusting that change can only start from within, we have had several highlights during 2022, from our Plastic-Free July campaign, encouraging our work-family to switch their daily use plastic products to more environmentally friendly alternatives; Baltim beach cleanup project in July 2022, and to our participation in COP27. We have also not neglected our role in developing our future leaders, through partnering with Egypt’s top educational institutes.”
Elmahdy concluded by sharing his excitement for 2023 and what it holds for Geocycle Egypt, “We are truly looking forward to the year 2023. It might just be Geocycle Egypt’s Golden year! One of our main projects would be the opening of our new pre-processing facility, Geocycle Hub during the second quarter of 2023. There is more. Keep an eye on our upcoming activities!”
