India’s evolving international partnerships are increasingly moving beyond conventional trade discussions toward strategic collaboration in critical minerals, clean technologies, advanced manufacturing and sustainability-linked industrial ecosystems. Recent developments emerging from India-Norway bilateral engagements indicate that sectors such as critical minerals, green transition technologies, electronics, digital infrastructure and industrial innovation are beginning to occupy a more central role within diplomatic and economic cooperation frameworks.
The two countries agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a “Green Strategic Partnership”, with both countries identifying multiple sectors linked to the future industrial and energy transition economy as priority areas for collaboration.
According to statements released by the Indian government, cooperation in critical minerals has emerged as a key focus area. The inclusion reflects the growing strategic importance of minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, graphite and rare earth elements as countries accelerate investments in electrification, batteries, renewable energy infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.
The development also comes at a time when India is simultaneously attempting to operationalise its domestic critical mineral ecosystem through initiatives under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), including the recycling and recovery of minerals from secondary resources such as e-waste, spent batteries, black mass and magnet scrap.
The Norway partnership adds an international dimension to these ambitions, particularly as Norway has developed significant capabilities in clean energy systems, maritime decarbonisation, battery-linked industries and sustainable industrial technologies.
The partnership also highlighted cooperation across renewable energy, offshore wind, carbon capture technologies and green shipping — sectors expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping future demand for recycled metals, battery materials and circular industrial supply chains.
