In order to involve more people in the efforts to help the environment, it's important to get younger generations involved. ‘Catch them young’ was the motive when Waste & Recycling MEA magazine and YES Full Circle came together to conduct the Electronic Scrap Collection drive at GEMS Legacy School, Garhoud, Dubai, to mark World Environment Day 2022.
The campaign, which ran from June 6 to 25, proved to be a huge success, as students from Grades 1 to 5 participated enthusiastically collecting a large number of end-of-life electronic items from their homes to drop in the e-waste collection box placed on the school campus. The box was filled with items such as chargers, keyboards, mobile phones, laptops, electronic toys, etc. which were collected by YES Full Circle for recycling at the end of the campaign.
Prizes were awarded by Waste & Recycling MEA to those children who collected the most number of end-of-life electronic items. Asha Alexander, Principal, GEMS Legacy School, gave away the prizes to the top three winners – Hiten Hardasani from Grade 2, Krish Aidasani from Grade 2 and Manasvi Kokkiligadda from Grade 1, respectively, in the presence of Swaliha Shanavas, Editor, Waste & Recycling MEA, and Latha Venkateswar, Vice Principal, GEMS Legacy School and other staff members.
The students were taught about the importance of source segregation and e-scrap recycling as part of the campaign.
