Northern Ireland company, Kiverco, has designed, built, and delivered a Dubai-based state-of-the-art material recovery facility (MRF) to the UAE-based company, Dulsco. The partnership has used Northern Ireland expertise to create a recycling processing plant with a capacity to process 80,000 tonnes of waste per year to recover material for manufacture, in line with the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy and the UAE Circular Economy Policy.
Gordon Lyons, Minister for the Economy in Northern Ireland, visited the facility located in Ras Al Khor, Dubai. He attended the site visit with David Stockton, CEO, Dulsco, Con Gallagher, Global Sales Manager and Gabriel O’Keefe, Export Sales Manager of Northern Ireland’s Kiverco.
The material recovery facility can sort 240 tonnes of multiple waste streams each day. Waste will be effectively sorted into a variety of different types, depending on size and type of materials. The plant can recover commodities such as metals, before plastic is then compressed for recycling and made ready for manufacture into new products.
Speaking on the new plant, Gordon Lyons, Minister for the Economy in Northern Ireland, commented: “The United Arab Emirates continues to forge ahead with ambitious targets for enabling long-term environmental sustainability. I am proud to see today how Northern Ireland’s expertise in the waste management industry is powering effective material recycling in both Dubai and the UAE. This plant is testament to Kiverco’s commitment and aspiration to continue to grow in this important region and highlights Northern Ireland’s world-class expertise in the sector.”
Some 90 percent of the new plant was built in Northern Ireland, before being shipped over and installed in Dubai. The plant will further help Dulsco to offer leading waste management solutions to residents of Dubai, and further bolster the city’s sustained efforts in reaching its strategic objectives in sustainability management.
“Dulsco continues to bring an approach of delivering leading environmental solutions to the UAE. To help meet the emirate’s sustainability objectives, a waste management plant is required that can both effectively recycle the city’s waste and contribute to UAE’s industrial sectors,” said David Stockton, CEO of Dulsco. “Working with an established and reputable company like Kiverco, coming from the rich waste management ecosystem of Northern Ireland, seemed a natural fit for Dulsco. With our history of operations in the UAE spanning over the past 87 years, we saw this as a natural next step in providing world-class services to the people of the country.”
Paul Carolan, General Manager at Kiverco, commented: “We are proud to be part of creating a more sustainable future for the people of Dubai, in line with the insightful vision of the emirate’s leadership. Through working in the advanced waste management sector of Northern Ireland, and benefitting from the broader ecosystem that has been built over previous decades, our company is now able to offer world-class facilities and services in waste management to entities across Europe, North America, Australasia, and, of course, the Middle East. We look forward to continuing to explore how Kiverco can support entities across the region in meeting their sustainability commitments.”
