The winners of the inaugural edition of the unique Middle East Waste & Recycling Awards were announced Thursday, 25th October, at a Gala Dinner and Ceremony held at The Address Dubai Marina, UAE. MEWAR Awards – the first ever initiative of its kind in the region – honoured the best performers across 14 categories and a total of 31 awards were presented at a well-attended function. Presented by Waste & Recycling Middle East magazine, MEWAR Awards is a celebration of success in adopting best practices in the waste recycling industry, and recognises outstanding individuals and organisations that have demonstrated leadership and innovation, and have significantly contributed to environmental sustainability in the Middle East.
The awards provide a benchmark for performance, industry recognition and professional credibility, all of which will act as drivers for sustainable growth in the region. The entries were evaluated by a grand jury panel of eminent international professionals from the waste recycling industry. Speaking about the concept and nomination process of MEWAR Awards, Sales & Marketing Head Taher Patrawala commented: “Hosting the Middle East Waste & Recycling Awards is an honour. The awards have been designed to raise the standards in the sector and provide a benchmark for performance and industry recognition. We have put in great efforts into the first ever awards for the region’s waste recycling industry and the inaugural edition drew participation from organisations across the Middle East.”
The awards ceremony was a grand success with over 250 industry professionals attending the event. The evening started with an interesting networking session with live music, followed by the glittering awards function that also had some sparkling entertainment that was appreciated by the audience. Delivering the welcome address, Swaliha Shanavas, Editor, Waste & Recycling Middle East said, “As the industry evolves and positive changes take place, with the focus now on circular economy, Waste & Recycling Middle East magazine felt it was the right time to acknowledge excellence in business best practices, and recognise individuals and organisations that have performed well in their sector, and are significantly contributing to the vision of various governments for a greener future.
“As we were designing the awards, we knew from the outset that it was critical to have the very best panel of judges and a fair judging process to ensure the results are balanced and credible. We are honoured to have a grand jury panel of prominent and respected professionals from the industry. We also brought on board KEO International Consultants as our Consulting Partner, which has helped ensure a transparent and fair judging process.” This was followed by the Keynote address by Surendra Borad, Chairman, Gemini Corporation, Belgium. In his speech, Borad highlighted the significance of MEWAR Awards and later commented that as a judge it had been a tough task to score the entries as there had been many entries with high-quality credentials. “I think it is a fantastic event, the first experience in Middle East recycling sector.
The team has done extremely well, the arrangement was simply extraordinary and I think there would be many more to come. I feel honoured to be part of this event.” Waste management companies Bee’ah and Dulsco scooped up 3 awards each at the event. Bee’ah won the “Waste Management Company of the Year” trophy, while Dulsco’s Chief Innovation Officer S. Madhumohan beat off competition to win the individual “Personality of the Year – Waste Management” award. Al Qaryan Group, Saudi Arabia, was declared “Metals Recycling Company of the Year” and walked away with the much-coveted trophy. Middle East Paper Company (MEPCO) won the “Paper Recycling Company of the Year” award.
Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency made an impact as it won the “Best Municipal Waste Diversion Programme” award, with the judges lauding the organisation for its excellent initiatives in source segregation and highly impressive public awareness programmes, and for successfully engaging the hospitality sector. Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSO) won the coveted “Environmental/ CSR Initiative of the Year” Award for its community farm initiative, which was appreciated by the jury. Enviroserve walked away with the “Electrical & Electronic Equipment Recycling Company of the Year – WEEE Processor” trophy.
Ecocoast Contracting won the “Technology Innovation of the Year” Award for Wasteshark - a waste and data collection robot, tackling pollution at the source. It has been created to efficiently clean up waste from marine environments, particularly designed to perform in harsh UV environments like the Middle East. Sustainable Environmental Technologies (SET), the first runner up, won the award for their food waste composting technology that is efficient, compact and easy to operate. Suez Middle East Recycling was second runner up in this category for their innovative digital application (App) that helps monitor waste in facilities and supports in reducing waste and improving recycling rates.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi won the “Medical Waste Management Best Practice” Award. Ajman Municipality was the runner up in this category. A tie amongst two contenders in the “Personality of the Year - Recycling” category led to the award being shared by Salam Sharif, Chairman of Sharif Metals and Ehsan Haji Amin, Chairman, Ala International. Overall, 31 awards were presented across 14 categories. The inaugural edition of the awards received over 130 nominations from many Middle Eastern countries and across various sectors including waste management, recycling, healthcare and hospitality among others.
